Car Seats
The car seat is not something to skimp on. When setting your baby gear budget, set aside a reasonable amount for at least one good car seat. You don't have to buy a Britax, BUT I would also not recommend the bottom of the line either. If you look for something used, be certain that the car seat has not been in an accident and that it is LATCH compatible. For infants, I really recommend the rear-facing infant car seat carriers. They make getting the baby in and out of the car too easy. And if the baby falls asleep, you can easily bring her inside with you without taking her out of the car seat -- very practical if the point of the drive was to get the baby asleep! Once your baby is big enough (check local or state laws), then upgrade to a forward facing toddler car seat.
